Decor | Rocking chair

It's rainy out, Seb has slept 2 hours longer than normal (praise God!), and dinner's in the oven. Baked potatoes. Yes, very fancy. And since all is right in the world, I couldn't help sharing this perfect rocking chair with you all. Now, maybe, I'll go start a project I've been thinking about?

Happy Friday!

P.S. I can't believe how little Sebastian used to be! He was still so new to us in that picture. Can you believe he's already 16 months!? Today he walked me over to the refrigerator to show me that he was hungry. Who is this kid?

Style | Cozy, pretty things

Here's a new-to-me photo blog for you to peruse since I slacked off on my weekend inspiration post last week. Hope you've had a lovely week, friends. We are feeling much better around here, and Cody fortunately seems to have escaped the bug. Little Sebbers still has a bit of a runny nose, and has a doc appointment on Monday to make sure it's not a sinus infection.

Do you have fun plans for the weekend?

P.S. What color would you call that skirt? Sienna? Apricot? I'm having the most difficult time figuring it out...

Style | Camilla Belle's glasses in "From Prada, to Nada"

Since I'm sicky, Cody surprised me with this movie from Redbox. Isn't he a nice guy? I really loved this film, but was even more wowed by Camilla Belle's sweet specs, or rather, her character Nora's. My favorite is the cat eye pair.

What do you think?

Remember last week when I thought I was getting sick? It was a false alarm, but now I actually am.

I thought it was too good to be true. Last week I just knew, while holding my sick little Seb and watching him rub his fingers all over his snotty face and then rub them all over my once germ-free face, that their was no chance of escaping this bug.

Here's to hoping it will cool down again this week, so that I can pull out some of my cozy sweaters. I have a favorite that Cody bought for me in Ireland a few years ago. Also, did you notice that in 3 of these 5 pictures, the woman is wearing a hat? It does look good, doesn't it.

Do you have a favorite sweater? They make such a nice accompaniment to hot tea. This one is my favorite to drink when I have a cold.

P.S. I have the most amazing husband. He has loads of work to do, but right now, at 12:42 a.m., he is getting me some Cepacol so that I can sleep.

Books | The Secret Garden

I finished reading Frances Hodgson Burnett’s THE SECRET GARDEN a few days ago and wanted to share my thoughts with you. I mentioned a little while ago that I’ve read it before, but I honestly didn’t really like it. I was in my early teens, and though I loved to read, I preferred your typical classic romance. Jane Austen, anyone? I also loved historical fiction of the Juvenile variety. I went through a huge Civil War phase. Nerdy much? All that to say that my first round with THE SECRET GARDEN, with all it’s talk of magic, and romanticism, left me wanting a little more. It’s not a terribly riveting book like most stories we love today, such as The Harry Potter series, but there is a sweetness and a richness about it, which is compelling in it’s own right.

This time, THE SECRET GARDEN came alive as I read. Here are 3 things that made me love every page:

SUSAN SOWERBY. Throughout the book, this character is known affectionately as “Mother.” She is a beacon of wisdom, hope, love, resourcefulness, generosity and selflessness, and is the one character whom I couldn’t get enough of. She is the mother  of both Martha, one of the maids at Misselthwaite Manor, and DIckon, Mary’s friend who talks to animals and wanders the Moor daily, watching the world come alive and rescuing helpless creatures. Susan Sowerby’s physical presence in the story is minimal, but her impact is great. She is the common thread that binds all the characters together.

She cares for her family of 12, has very little money, gets a small break when Martha comes home once each month, and her joy and sense of purpose and calling never waver. Her children remain hungry after every meal, but she cheerfully sends them out on the moor to get “fat off the air,” and they love her for it. She is clearly an example of wisdom and resourcefulness, and is quoted throughout the book by her children and Mrs. Medlock, the housekeeper of Misselthwaite.

Susan Sowerby became a great encourager even to me as I read THE SECRET GARDEN. I felt that I had a friend in her and an example of how a mother ought to be, and how it doesn’t take money, perfect circumstances, stylish clothes, or even good nutrition to be a blessing to others and to have the love and respect of your family and community.
PERSPECTIVE. Never have I read a book that so heavily emphasizes perspective. We see through Colin Craven, a rich and spoiled self-proclaimed invalid, Mary Lennox, a sour-faced and unloved orphan, and Archibald Craven, a lonely, reclusive widower filled with bitterness, the way thoughts can poison every part of our being. In contrast, Susan, Martha, and Dickon Sowerby, though poor, are rich in love, generosity and hope. No one person has close to perfect circumstances, but it is not their situation that matters, but how they look at it, and the thoughts that fill their minds.
TRANSFORMATION. Just as the Secret Garden comes alive with weeding, pruning, and care, so the characters begin to shed their grayness and are filled with wick, a word which means alive, the book tells us, in Yorkshire.
This is a hopeful story full of rich details, simple truths, and lasting virtue. I’m so glad I gave it another chance.
Have you read this book? I would love to know your thoughts. Does this sound like a novel you would enjoy?

P.S. If you want to read something pretty, this book comes in two delightful options! Sometimes it's ok to judge a book by it's cover. 1 / 2

I'm supposed to be running errands right now (bleh), but I couldn't resist posting a few pictures of my favorite pieces from the Alexa Chung Collection for Madewell, as it debuted today! I'll admit that I'm not floored by any of her pieces, but I do like them. What do you think?

I guess I should head out into the steamy & sticky. Doesn't Fall start tomorrow? Haha, I guess there is one more day where hot and steamy is OK.

I'm a bit inspired by bears right now. Don't know why, but I love them.

Rough day here, so I might be gone for a bit. Seb has a bad cold and I think I'm next.

G'night, friends.

Home | Clothes for Seb

Here are a few of the things I picked up at the thrift store the other day. I am pretty choosy about clothes, but there were some great, simple things in just Seb's size. I also bought a basket that is currently holding our dirty laundry. I could think of nobler uses, but hey, we needed a hamper!

Where do you find good deals? I am dying to get these vintage patio chairs off Craigslist. They are calling my name!

Don't you love Pinterest? These images popped up on my feed a moment ago, and I just had to share. Enjoy!

P.S. In case you love a good chevron pattern (who doesn't?) you could easily make the diy pattern on the left into a gorgeous homemade version.

Texile | Ilana Kohn

I can't stop looking at these gorgeous designs by Ilana Kohn, and wondering how she was ever able to create such loveliness. They remind me of these Shabd Baggu bags, which I love. The marbling is quite luxurious looking, don't you think? I would love to know more about her process and what inspires her designs. Have a lovely Tuesday, friends!

Have you ever done any work with printing or dyeing?

What Seb Wore, Vol. 1

I'm starting a "What Seb Wore" series for two reasons: to give Seb more face-time on my blog, because I know that's the real reason you come here, and because then maybe I'll start paying attention to what I put him in! Seriously, it's bad. This poor child looks like a vagabond more often than not. As much as I love little babe clothes, I sadly often take a defeatist approach about it. "But I don't have any money for that! Boo hoo hoo." It's embarrassing, really. But the truth is, we are blessed to have so many generous friends and family that shower Seb with oodles of clothes. See rockin' shoes c/o Aunt B, and sweet Zara pants c/o Nanny a.k.a. AA. So how much did I have to spend to clothe Seb for church this morning?

$1.19

I am no longer allowed to say that I don't have money to dress my babe the way I like. How do you get around tight budgets and dress your little one the way you love?

Two baby DIY's on the docket:
Toddler sleep sack
Pants that fit his little, ahem, large cloth diapered bum

Weekend Inspiration

1 / 2

In case you haven't noticed, I haven't talked about food much lately. This is mostly because I've had a terrible time trying to pace myself with our food money and haven't worked out a good system of what to buy so that we don't run out of money + what to buy so that I can make cool recipes once a week and still have food for the rest of the week. Moving creates all kinds of problems. You probably know this, but what you don't know is that I did make something new last week, and have been sitting on it because it is a recipe from a new blog I found, and I wanted to share it with you this weekend. I'm so sneaky.

It's called Budget Bytes. (I told Cody that If I had a blog like this I would probs call it Budgets Bite. Attitude, Mary, attitude.) Anyway... The lovely Beth decided to make a blog about food that proves that you can make new, tasty, and nutritious recipes for very little money. With each recipe, she breaks down the cost per item and serving. Cool, right? She even has a handy dandy pantry list to get you started. Perfect for those who are moving out on their own for the first time and have to build their pantry from scratch. Have you found any lovely new food blogs, lately? Do share!

What inspired you this week?

Decor | Rust obsession, Part II

1 / 2

And my rust obsession continues. This fabulous hue can work wonders in your home. It magically goes with brown, gray and black and meshes with a plethora of decorating styles. Do you like rustic? Go with rust. Do you fancy a scandinavian modern feel? Rust. What about a Better Homes and Gardens look? Rust again. It works as such a lovely neutral, or if you want to pump up the color, pick a shade that lends more towards orange, and you have a statement piece. My favorite way to use rust is in furniture or accent pieces. You can count on seeing a rusty hued couch in my living room some day.

P.S. That room is my dream room. It is exciting to see how my home is slowly evolving into that kind of space. Patience, patience. Also, pink + rust!

I’m not entirely sure where this color falls on the fashion radar, but for me, it's all about the rusty hues. The best part? It looks good on everyone.

What is your favorite color for Fall?

P.S. Gold is a close relative of rust, right? I love these picks for the kiddos.

Food | My new French Press

I bought a french press yesterday! This decision was spurred on by a combination of two friends. One old and one new. The new discovered this amazing little coffee shop in Chapel Hill that makes the most delcious lattes, and the old had us over for dinner and her husband made coffee for us using a french press. It was so tasty and made me realize that I could make a good cup of coffee at home. So often I make some only to pour it down the drain after a few sips.

Do you like coffee? How do you drink it and how do you make it at home? Do you have a favorite roast? Give me your knowledge!

I've come a long way after a traumatic coffee experience when I was little. I had coca cola in a cup, and my grandma had coffee in a cup. They looked the same, and I chose wrong. It was cold, and very black. Haha.

That was my first taste. Do you remember your first taste of coffee?

I think the approach of Fall has this delightful beverage on everyone's mind...
Coffee Break in Italy -  loved this, Diana!

P.S. I'm saving my pennies for this burr grinder and milk frother, too.

Fitness | Weaving it into your routine

I have been sorely neglecting my workouts lately. Can I get a sad face up in here? We all talk about the necessity of working out, how much we loathe ourselves when we don't, and generally seem to be on such a fitness rollercoaster. Do you feel that way? Or are you a complete workout guru? I'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject. You know, what motivates you to throw your gym shoes on and how you stay interested in your workouts.

Lately, my essentials to forming a habit of working out are variety in my workout videos (I love ones with 10 min. segments so that I can mix and match), and vitamins. B-complex, baby. It helps me be less stressed and have energy to want to exercise.  Garance Dore wrote a bit on this topic last week, and I found it really interesting and encouraging. It reminds me that fitness is a way of life and is gradual. It takes one day at a time to develop the habit, and is not something you patch on, but that you weave into your routine. Creating a habit of fitness in this way makes it next to impossible to remove, without unraveling the whole.

Tell me, what is your workout of choice?

Little One | Blabla does it again

I just found a sneak peek of the Fall/Winter 2011/12 Blabla farm collection. Aren't these little guys so charming? I've been dying to have a Blabla doll for quite some time, and now I'm kind of glad that I didn't buy one before! Maybe my, I mean Seb's, *ahem*, new Blabla doll is being born in a stable far far away this very minute. Isn't Albert the Donkey such a charmer?

P.S. More images and info.

Textile | Beldi

1 / 2 / 3

I rarely talk about textiles and basketry, but I really don't know why. My three favorite ways of decorating our home are through textiles, basketry and plants. All of which I have far too little of, but that doesn't really matter. I collect them when I can, and I think they my love of these things still shines through in our home. Recently we were at Whole Foods and I spotted this marvelous blue and orange basket that was woven to look slouchy. I dreamed of it for weeks, and still plan to spend a little bit of my splurge money on such a purchase as soon as I am able.

Yesterday I was checking out the latest posts on Bliss Blog and just about drooled all over my keyboard when I saw the images she shared from the shop, Beldi. I hope you like them, too.

Currently I'm keeping a weather-eye open for some used basket laundry hampers. My wallet doesn't like the ones I've found at retail stores. Any suggestions?

Seb | Bathtime gets crazy

Cody takes care of evening bath time, so as you can imagine, it can get a little rowdy. Mohawks, anyone?

P.S. If my son has scum behind his ears, don't look at me!

Weekend Inspiration

Today's new-to-me blog is Emma Dime. This little space is home to Emma Robertson's creative ideas, fabulous style, and collection of beautiful things. She has amazing personal style, and a great eye for all things lovely. I really appreciate the fresh, clean and honest feel and look of her blog—no fussiness, just the things she finds charming. My favorite regular feature of her blog is the Lovely Lady spotlight. Not only do the women she features have inspiring style, but the way in which she presents them is unadulterated and well, simply put, lovely. I hope you'll pop on over to Emma Dime and see for yourself. I will certainly continue to do so.

What inspired you this week?

Style | Blue loafers

As soon as I saw this picture, I became slightly obsessed with the idea of blue loafers. As you know, I've been on the hunt for a new pair of shoes to replace my Minnetonka kitty suede moccasins, and these are simply amazing; the perfect combination of a moccasin and a loafer. Here are a few look-a-likes that I've found.
