Food | It's been nice knowing you, Microwave

This weekend was our first without a microwave. I've been wanting to go without one since Cody and I got married, but held off for one reason or another. All those reasons seem to be gone now, so we took the plunge. My parents got rid of their microwave (actually the one we've been using!) when I was in high school, so I am very aware of what life is like without it, and really, it's definitely a life I can live with. The boy's daily breakfast of quick oats, raw goat's milk, and raw honey will require a bit more time and planning on my part, and we will potentially need to acquire a few more small pans for heating up leftovers and baby food, but I think it will be time well spent.

Have you ever considered going without a microwave?

P.S. Seb really looks like that when he's eating his breakfast. He likes big bites that require intense concentration and warrior facial expressions.

  1. I have considered this, and it gives me courage that you took the plunge! The thing I probably use it for most is re-heating coffee that has cooled in the press. I suppose I could just use a little saucepan for that. What do you do about reheating something that's not really in soup, sauce, or stir-fry form? I would love to get rid of it too. I know it's not very healthy and it takes up so much space in the kitchen. I have a collection of inspiring kitchen photos I've found (for when I get to decorate my own) and I don't think one of them has a microwave in it- they're not exactly attractive, are they?

    1. kate, i totally had to reheat my press coffee today! as a mom, when do we NOT have to reheat our coffee!? i just poured it in a saucepan, and it took basically no time at all. and if you rinse the pan out right away, you don't have to wash it every time. and i'm so enjoying the space it's freed up in our kitchen. i'm always wanting to downsize and simplify, and getting rid of the microwave has certainly made a huge difference.

  2. We've gone without one for almost 2 years now! Our first apartment had one built in and when we moved to the house we are renting it was about a week after we moved in that I realized we didn't have one. And then I realized it had been a whole week and I didn't miss it! Since having Ben there have been choice moments when I have thought of it. Two things that don't reheat as well on the stove: rice and pasta.
The best part is the extra counterspace!!

    1. and pizza! pizza is so hard to reheat, but i guess you just need to turn the oven on and use a little patience. : ) it is definitely hard when it comes time to heat up baby food, i think. that's actually the main reason i have waited until now to get rid of it. But even though we'll be entering the world of purees again soon, i think i've got enough of a handle on it to stay sane without a microwave. it just takes a little more time, and maybe a few more pans.

  3. We've never had one, and we don't miss it at all. Once when we visit Eric's parents, I was helping Eric's mom in the kitchen, and started using the stove to heat something up before she stopped me and pointed at the microwave. It was almost scary using it! The only thing I miss is softening or melting butter. I hate washing just the one saucepan!

    1. ooo i hadn't thought about butter... but then again, maybe i'll actually get it to the consistency that i want on the stove. i'm always practically boiling it in the microwave when all i want to do is soften it. perhaps my accuracy will improve. : ) i'm so excited to see so many people without microwaves!

  4. Our microwave broke in November and we have gone without one since. It actually hasn't been bad at all. And I LOVE the counter space!

  5. We got rid of ours when we moved into our house last May and definitely don't miss it. To heat baby food we actually would put a serving in a little glass jar or milk storage container and put it in our little bottle warmer which basically steamed it warm from the outside of the container. It worked great and I think the bottle warmer cost us 5 or 10 bucks.
